About: |
I am a research participant for a project on the food desert that exist in Humboldt Park, Chicago’s largest Puerto Rican community. Because Humboldt Park is generally a lower income neighborhood, there have been no efforts from large grocery stores to set up stores anywhere near the community. As a result most people end up shopping at corner stores that do not offer fresh produce, or have produce that is not necessarily in good shape or appealing. This has caused a high level of obeisity within the community, especially in the youth, leading often times to more serious health problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure. In order to reverse this process, I feel knowing more about organizations such as this one will help. |

About: |
We have collected data locally that suggests in low income, African American neighborhoods there is a lack of grocery stores offering healthy options and an abundance of fast food restaurants offering unhealthy options. We are in the process of creating policy briefs to share this data with appropriate leaders within the community. Through this process we hope to find ways to create policy changes that encourage and support healthy eating. |

Several of our Network members are involved with programs that focus on getting healthy fresh food (local whenever possible) into bodegas, the most common form of corner store in New York City. As the Network, we are interested in possibly serving as a clearing house for this work and certainly as a resource and link to best practices here and elsewhere. |

About: |
The Department’s Urban Food Systems Program in New York City is interested in the Healthy Corner Store Initiative because we are working to increase the availability of local fruits and vegetables in NYC corner stores/bodegas, especially those within our communities that have been defined as food desserts. We are currently making direct connections between NYC bodegas, their distributors, and a Monday-Friday wholesale farmers market in the South Bronx. And, we preparing for the new WIC Fruit and Vegetable opportunity. We are also interested in best practices for community-based efforts to improve food choice such as Adopt-a-Bodega school-based initiatives. |

LCHAY is Lane County’s childhood obesity prevention coalition. We engage a broad range of stakeholders and advocate for policies that improve the physical activity and nutrition environment. We are just beginning to explore opportunities for working with food retailers in our local communities. We have drafted a "food map" of a small metro area showing food retailers, public transit routes and schools; all with a backdrop indicating poverty rates in that city. We are also convening community conversations to determine feasibility of developing a new farmers market in this same metro area. |

My organization helps to facilitate the meetings of the Greater Johnsons Park Health Coalition, on Milwaukee's near north side. The group is undertaking a community food assessment related to food access. The area has many corner stores that are a source of food for neighbors, but are not optimal sources of healthy food. Our group has not yet decided what sort of action it wants to take regarding corner stores. |
